On the DART railway platforms in Dublin in the 1990s there was a sign warning people to PLEASE KEEP BEHIND THIS LINE to protect waiting passengers from oncoming trains. Subsequently the messages were regularly repainted—except for the word ‘PLEASE’ which was allowed to fade. Was this an economy measure, some accountant having calculated the annual savings from not repainting the word ‘Please’ several times on each of the 28 stations? Or was it perhaps a lawyer who had spotted that ‘Please’ was insufficiently prescriptive and therefore opening the company to being sued should an accident occur?
